I love to get our wildcats excited about reading, because I do believe that reading is the most important thing in the world. I created the Reading Rock Star program because I know winning the 1st grade reading contest back at Kathleen Bankston Elementary helped me become the reading rock star I am today.
This year I started tracking our logs with gold stars (I copied it from a similar program at my gym). I added parties because we all love events. We already have over a hundred kids who have turned in 3 or more logs and are attending the Reading Rock Star party in January (cupcake decoration= fun, fun, fun!). Last week, Dr. Dunne and I added a new incentive! Every student who turns in 5 or more logs by April 21st gets to go on a field trip to the Georgia Museum of Art in May. It will be super fun! Get those logs in!
In other news, last Wednesday our 4th and 5th graders had an author visit with League of Seven’s Alan Gratz. It was dynamite! He told us all about his new book, and about his writing process. Super thanks to Will Walton, Rachel Watkins and Janet Geddis of Avid Bookshop for helping set this visit up.
Want to read the League of Seven? Let me know if you want me to add your name to the waiting list.
I have been teaching research skills to 5th grade. Need a refresher on tips for using the encyclopedia? Check out this video!
Last week K-3 and I read How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We brainstormed ways we could do nice things for others and grow our hearts. My fave- let your parents sleep in! Our 3rd grade and I also have been writing thank you notes to Sandy Creek Nature Center for our recent field trip. We even learned to address envelopes!
Have the best week ever! Happy Reading!
