Library Happenings, Wildcat News and Book Trailer Tips

Wow, wow, wow- we’ve been super busy!

Our kindergarten and I have been reading some great read alouds for Black History Month.  We’ve loved Sugar Hill by R. Gregory Christie and Before John Was a Jazz Giant, about saxophonist supreme, John Coltrane.

Our 1st grade has been learning to use the library.  Lots of scavenger hunts, learning about ABC order, and learning new authors.

This week and next week we are 2nd and 3rd graders are working on creating book trailers. Check out this video for some tips.

Our 4th and 5th grade have begun practicing for Battle of the Books.  Can’t wait.

Rose of Athens Theater has visited twice.  They presented a workshop on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. LOVED!

Lastly,we have another stellar installment of Wildcat News.  Check it out below!

Wildcat News and the I Have a Dream Contest

We just started our 2nd semester of interest clusters.  Some of our students chose Wildcat News, where they write, direct, and create their own newscast.  Check out this week’s edition.

We are very proud that one of our own 3rd graders, Giana Bermudez, was recognized in the CCSD I Have a Dream contest.  Way to go, Giana! Watch Giana and other winners share their dreams below.

January Recap, a Donors Choose Grant, and Judge Makin Visits!

Last week Judge Ben Makin, a parent from our school, visited our 3rd grade.  We asked him lots of great questions about our judicial system.  We learned what a judge does, how judges use evidence to make decisions, and more.  Mrs. Sugiuchi took notes.  You can read them here.

Over the past month we’ve read a variety of books exploring persuasive writing, civil rights history, and the Battle of the Books. Crowd favorites include Ruth and the Green Book, the Lorax, and This Is the Dream.  We also have been working on reference skills using the dictionary and thesaurus.

Our main focus this month is exploring new authors.  We are compiling lists of authors we like, figuring out their call numbers, and finding them on the shelves, a skill I hope you will use your entire life! Next week we will create lists of our favorite authors in padlet.

Recently Mrs. Sugiuchi wrote a Donors Choose grant called Readers Are Leaders.  It was fully funded within five days!  We used it to buy books our students have requested, mainly superheroes and princess stories.  Big thanks to all for your support.  You rule!
