Book Bingo, Author Visit, and More

Happy New Year! We’re starting our year off with a reading challenge here at OAES and we need your help! Grades K-5 have the opportunity to take part in the Wildcat Book Bingo, which basically will give our kids opportunities to complete fun activities to enjoy reading. Students will earn a special prize for completing the bingo card, which will also count as a check toward the Reading Rock Stars field trip in May. All entries are due February 15th. Please help your child takes part in this fun challenge and get excited about reading!

The Reading Rock Stars Party is this Friday afternoon, January 18th. We will have dancing and cupcakes in the cafeteria for the 190 plus students who are invited. I’d love to have help chaperoning starting at 1:20. Please get in touch at sugiuchid@clarke.k12.ga.us if you are available.

On Tuesday, February 5th at 1:30 Tom Watson, author of the popular Stick Dog series, will be visiting the Wildcat Media CenterGrades 3-5 will have an author visit in the cafeteria at 1:30. Forms are going home today so students can purchase their own copy of Stick Dog. Please turn these forms in no later than Friday. If you purchase now, books will only cost $11.69 with an Avid discount. (Otherwise they will be $14.04).

Lastly, I just returned from the Key West Literary Seminar. It was amazing! I got to meet my hero, Margaret Atwood, author of the Handmaid’s Tale, in addition to 70 other books, including the Penelopiad, a retelling of the Odyssey. The main takeaway I got that applies to our age friends is the importance of reading, reading widely, and the especially the influence of myth upon so many works. I was inspired to begin re-reading the Odyssey this weekend, a new translation that just came out from presenter Emily Wilson. I’m definitely going to be directing our kids to mythology in the future, sharing the connection between mythology and the superhero stories they love. I also attended several sections connecting writing and reading. Event coverage can be found here, including (soon) a section written by me.

Come visit the library soon! Looking forward to seeing you and your students!
