Shelli Johannes Came to Visit OAES!

Last Friday we had an amazing author visit with Shelli Johannes, author of CeCe Loves Science. It was incredible! The kids LOVED meeting Shelli.  They loved having her read the book, and they especially loved asking questions. You should check out the website– there are lots of fun activities! Big thanks to Janet Geddis and Kate Lorraine of Avid Bookshop for bringing Shelli to Athens!

Welcome back Wildcats!  It’s been great to see all of you! Happy new school year!

We are finally settled into the new media center.  We love our new space!

Last Friday we just celebrated our first group of Reading Rock Stars.  We had so many people reading in August.  Way to go! This list is of our summer reading rock stars.  They are invited to a special reading rock star party on Friday, September 14th.  Parents, please send Ms. Sugi a picture of your student’s summer reading log to sugiuchid@clarke.k12.ga.us if your student’s name is not on the list. Let me know if your student read more than 100 books this summer.

Last of all, on Friday, September 7, from 1:30-2:15, author Shelli Johannes of CeCe Loves Science will be visiting K-2 in the cafeteria. It’s our first author visit in the new school!  Want to purchase a copy? Bring a check/ cash or credit- price is $16.19.

Our Book Fair is October 15-19th! This fall it will be hosted by Avid Bookshop.  Would you like to request a book for Avid to stock?  Complete this form!

Author Visits, Managing Screen Time Over the Holidays, and Library Fundraiser

I love hosting authors at OAES because it allows our students to realize that regular people write and create books. We’ve had two more amazing author visits recently.  In October Joey Weiser shared with our 4th and 5th grade about the process of creating his graphic novel series Mermin.  The kids loved his presentation.  I have had to order an additional 15 copies from our lovely local Avid Bookshop because these books don’t stay on the shelves.

Avid bookseller Caleb Zane Huett visited in early December to promote his book Top Elf.  During this visit, Caleb modeled how to write a story using our students’ suggestions.  It was tons of fun!  At both visits, students won copies of books in our super special raffle.  Top Elf is another book that doesn’t stay on our shelves!

Looking for holiday presents?  Copies of books from all of our recent author visits- Mermin, Top Elf, Juniper Gets Wet, and The Girl Who Kept Night in Her Closet– may be purchased at Avid Bookshop.  If you’d like to purchase books for the library any time of the year, head over to our fundraiser page at Bound to Stay Bound. Thanks in advance for your support!

During break, students might be tempted to spend a lot of time on screens, a practice which can lead to lack of sleep, aggression, social problems, and obesity.  Families Managing Media has some great suggestions for activities instead, which include encouraging your child to play with Legos, blocks, Play-doh, to solve puzzles, create art, read, play musical instruments, and more. As a parent, I try to manage media consumption by not allowing screens in the bedroom, by setting time limits on how long my son stays on screens, and by modeling media use, something I’ve accomplished by limiting my social media use. OAES students are always amazed to hear that my 16 year old son is a proud carrier of a flip phone:).

Regardless, I hope you have a happy holiday! Happy Reading!

Exciting Events!

Tomorrow, author C. Alexander London will be visiting our media center.  We are thrilled!  London is debuting his new novel, the Wild Ones.  He is also the author of the Accidental Adventure series. Thanks Avid Bookshop for making this happen.

We have been having many fun lessons in the media center on how to find information.  First we went on scavenger hunts, then we filmed ourselves discussing the process with flipgrid, a technique that we really enjoy here because it requires us to actively think about what we are learning.  Our younger grades have been using flipgrid to share what they know about their favorite fiction books.

Check out our grids below!

2nd and 3rd grade:

Finding Fiction and Everyone Books

Using the Dewey Decimal System

K-1:

Fiction Books

(You can email me for the password at sugiuchid@clarke.k12.ga.us or find it on our facebook site).

Last week our Osmos arrived!  Osmos are a game system that allows children to use iPads in interactive play.  This week we have been trying out the tangram feature, which helps our kids think spatially, and introduces them to geometrical concepts. I first used an Osmo in Andy Plemmons Media Center at Barrow- and our kids and teachers LOVE! Check out pictures below.

Our book fair will be held October 13-19.  More updates will be posted soon.

December Diversions, Alan Gratz Author Visit, and Reading Rock Star Fun!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I love to get our wildcats excited about reading, because  I do believe that reading is the most important thing in the world.  I created the Reading Rock Star program because I know winning the 1st grade reading contest back at Kathleen Bankston Elementary helped me become the reading rock star I am today.

This year I started tracking our logs with gold stars (I copied it from a similar program at my gym).  I added parties because we all love events.  We already have over a hundred kids who have turned in 3 or more logs and are attending the Reading Rock Star party in January (cupcake decoration= fun, fun, fun!). Last week, Dr. Dunne and I added a new incentive!  Every student who turns in 5 or more logs by April 21st gets to go on a field trip to the Georgia Museum of Art in May.  It will be super fun!  Get those logs in!

In other news, last Wednesday our 4th and 5th graders had an author visit with League of Seven’s Alan Gratz.  It was dynamite!  He told us all about his new book, and about his writing process.  Super thanks to Will Walton, Rachel Watkins and Janet Geddis of Avid Bookshop for helping set this visit up.

Want to read the League of Seven?  Let me know if you want me to add your name to the waiting list.

I have been teaching research skills to 5th grade. Need a refresher on tips for using the encyclopedia?  Check out this video!

Last week K-3 and I read How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  We brainstormed ways we could do nice things for others and grow our hearts. My fave- let your parents sleep in! Our 3rd grade and I also have been writing thank you notes to Sandy Creek Nature Center for our recent field trip.  We even learned to address envelopes!

Have the best week ever!  Happy Reading!
