The Book Fair Is Coming, BTSB Wishlist, and More!

More than anything, I want our students to love reading.  Each time our students visit the library, I show them how I track my reading on a reading log.  I also have made a reading wall of all the books from our library that I have read.  I add to this every week.

Today we celebrated our Reading Rock Stars at WOW.  Close to 200 students turned in reading logs! In the past, we randomly chose 12 students K-5 to win a prize.  This year we are also having those same four students share something  from their reading life on the Reading Rock Star window near the cafeteria. Last month I displayed pictures and quotes from our summer reading rock stars.

One way to buy books for your home and support the library is by shopping at our Scholastic Book Fair which will take place October 10-13.  If you would like to VOLUNTEER to help at the BOOK FAIR, please sign up here.

We have a special fundraiser at BTSB where you can purchase books to support our library.  Check out our wishlist here.

This week in the the upper grades have been focusing on learning how to stay safe online and not sharing private information.  PK and I read my all time favorite book , WHERE the WILD THINGS ARE.  K and I discussed community helpers using the book WELCOME TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD, A BARRIO ABC, and 1st Grade and I learned about the importance of following your dreams with DRUM DREAM GIRL.

Don’t forget to read every night and write it down on your reading log.  Happy Reading!

Reading Rock Stars, Book Fair, Library Lessons, and…

We are hosting our Fall Book Fair October 10- 17.  We start setting up October 9.  I’d love to have your help. You can go to this link to sign up.
This past month our first grade has been studying one of my favorite genres, fairy tales.  We have read several including Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The students are great at identifying fairy tale characteristics and are currently writing them in their classrooms.  I can’t wait to read them!
We’ve been reading about community helpers in kindergarten, pairing informational texts with narratives.  The students really enjoyed covering librarians, which we paired with last year’s GA Book Award Nominee, Miss Brooks Loves Books (And I Don’t).  We have also studied teachers and police officers.  This week we are reading Work: An Occupational ABC.
Our 2nd and 3rd grade is learning to take notes from informational books. 2nd grade has been studying Georgia Habitats.  Our 3rd Grade has been learning about the Rocks and Minerals of Georgia.  Catch Ms. Kramer’s students in action in our slideshow.

I’ve been introducing the Battle of the Books to our 4th Grade.  Our 5th grade has been going on scavenger hunts in the Dewey Decimal section.  They are earning their way around our library.  This will help them when they visit the Athens-Clarke County Library, as well as when they go to middle and high school.
I discuss the importance of reading daily with all of our students each week.  Last week we celebrated 100 plus for becoming Reading Rock Stars.  Way to go!
Last Friday we had several dozen parents attend our Parent PLD Session.  The next session will take place in our computer lab on Wednesday, October 15 @ 6 p.m.  Stop by our Book Fair afterwards!  We will be open until 7:30 that evening.
Have a great week!

Nancy Krulik Author Visit, Book Fair, Battle of the Books, Books for Keeps Fundraiser

Welcome back, Wildcats!  Hope you had a great spring break!

Today author Nancy Krulik visited our Media Center.  She shared excepts from each of her series, Katie Kazoo Switcheroo, George Brown, Class Clown, and the Magic Bone Series. She spoke with the 2nd grade about all aspects of the writing process. She stressed the importance of revising your work.

An anonymous benefactor donated money that enabled us to purchase  five of Ms. Krulik’s books for each classroom.  Another Wildcat friend’s donation helped Mrs. Sugiuchi purchase complete sets of all three series for our SLMC.  We are all thrilled to read our gifts! Thanks to Janet Geddis, Rachel Watkins, and Will Walton from Avid Bookshop for arranging this visit and for making it a success!

Next week we are hosting our spring book fair. We are already excited about the books- we’ve been watching and discussing different book trailers this week.  If you or someone you know would like to volunteer for the book fair, you can sign up here.

Next Monday @ 8:45 we will be hosting the 5th grade Battle of the Books in the cafeteria.  May the most well-read team win!

This Saturday, seven of our students will be participating in “Are You Smarter Than an Athens Grade Schooler?,” a fun, family-friendly event benefiting Books for Keeps, an organization that provides free books to students. This May all of our students will be receiving books from Books for Keeps.
