Reading Rock Stars, Book Fair, Library Lessons, and…

We are hosting our Fall Book Fair October 10- 17.  We start setting up October 9.  I’d love to have your help. You can go to this link to sign up.
This past month our first grade has been studying one of my favorite genres, fairy tales.  We have read several including Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The students are great at identifying fairy tale characteristics and are currently writing them in their classrooms.  I can’t wait to read them!
We’ve been reading about community helpers in kindergarten, pairing informational texts with narratives.  The students really enjoyed covering librarians, which we paired with last year’s GA Book Award Nominee, Miss Brooks Loves Books (And I Don’t).  We have also studied teachers and police officers.  This week we are reading Work: An Occupational ABC.
Our 2nd and 3rd grade is learning to take notes from informational books. 2nd grade has been studying Georgia Habitats.  Our 3rd Grade has been learning about the Rocks and Minerals of Georgia.  Catch Ms. Kramer’s students in action in our slideshow.

I’ve been introducing the Battle of the Books to our 4th Grade.  Our 5th grade has been going on scavenger hunts in the Dewey Decimal section.  They are earning their way around our library.  This will help them when they visit the Athens-Clarke County Library, as well as when they go to middle and high school.
I discuss the importance of reading daily with all of our students each week.  Last week we celebrated 100 plus for becoming Reading Rock Stars.  Way to go!
Last Friday we had several dozen parents attend our Parent PLD Session.  The next session will take place in our computer lab on Wednesday, October 15 @ 6 p.m.  Stop by our Book Fair afterwards!  We will be open until 7:30 that evening.
Have a great week!

PLD Parent Training, Reading Logs Due

Last Thursday evening we hosted our first training for parents about our student PLDs (personal learning devices). Over 100 parents attended this session.  In order for your child to take home a device, you must 1. sign the form and 2. attend a parent orientation session either here or at another school. If you choose to attend a session elsewhere, let us know and I will verify it.

We will be offering additional sessions soon.

1. Friday, October 3 @ 7:30 in the Media Center (Principal’s Coffee)

2. Wednesday, October 15 @ 6:00 p.m. in the Computer Lab– stop by our Book Fair afterwards!

Our students have been reading books galore!  Make sure you turn in your reading log today.

Happy reading!

Jennifer Holm Author Visit, Reading Rock Stars, Using the Media Center, & More!

We’ve had a busy few weeks in the OAES Media Center!

Author Jennifer Holm visited.  She met with two different groups of students from the 2nd- 5th grade.  She told us about the 14th Goldfish, her new book. She told us about her love for science, introducing us to a few of her favorite scientists (Curie, Oppenheimer, and Salk). She even drew Babymouse for us!

We celebrated our August Reading Rock Stars. Nearly 200 wildcats completed their reading logs!  Don’t forget- the next batch of logs are due September 23rd.  Remember, if you return three by December, you can attend the

Our Pre-K and K classes have been exploring nursery rhymes. In 1st grade we have been comparing and contrasting different fairy tales. All of our grades have been practicing finding good fit books.  2nd -5th have been embarking on different scavenger hunts.  We’ve learned about the various sections of the library, and understanding how the Dewey Decimal section is arranged.  We’ve also practiced searching in the catalog by our interests and reading level, which will help when we begin researching our nonfiction reports.

Books for Keeps Is the Best!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Growing up I had a library. I’m a big reader because  my grandmother made sure I had lots of books.  If all were right in my world, every kid in our school would have their own library at their house.  Thanks to local organization Books for Keeps, this goal is happening. The past two days,  every single student in our school Grades K-4 has taken home 12 free books, which they were able to choose for themselves.  (5th grade will receive their books on Thursday).  It’s been thrilling!

I LOVE the way Books for Keeps organizes their distribution- every student self-selects their books.  Afterwards, they conduct exit survey asking the kids what books they are most excited about, and what they wish we had more of.  They base their entire method on this study. It works!

The past two days, I have had so many kids come up and hug me and tell me how excited they are about reading.  Every time I walk into a classroom or into the hall, I spy a kid with their head in a book.  The past few weeks the kids and I have had great discussions about the best way to thank Melaney, Leslie, Vicky and all of the volunteers is by reading every day.  I’m already seeing this in action.  Chills!  Way to go, Wildcats!  Keep up the good work!

Upcoming Events and Poetry Month Pics

Greetings, Wildcats!  Hope you are enjoying poetry month.  We are having a blast with our poetry month centers! We have several different stations where our students read poems, write poems, illustrate poems, copy poems, or create poems of their own.  See some of our magic in action below.

This month is flying!  We have several upcoming events planned.

Thursday, April 24th is Poem in Your Pocket Day.  Make sure you have a poem in your pocket to share with those you love! Can’t find the right poem?  Haven’t written one yet?  Make sure you stop by one of our poetry stations, which will be in operation through Wednesday, April 30.

It’s super important to read during the summer break.  If you don’t, you lose valuable reading skills. The Athens- Clarke County Library has a great summer reading program to encourage all of you to come in and check out books. On Thursday, May 1, ACC Librarian Ms. Kim James will visit OAES to discuss the summer reading program.  I will also introduce our summer reading lists, which we are compiling this week.

Don’t have enough books to read at your house?  On Monday, May 5 and Tuesday May 6 volunteers from awesome Athens organization Books for Keeps will be here to distribute 12 free books to each student in our school grades K-5. This is our first I am so THRILLED, and I know you all will be too.

Wednesday, May 7 Mr. Marty Barrett and his crew from the Woodruff Arts Center will share their Poetry Off the Page Program.  This event was sponsored by AthFest Educates and our P.T.O.  Thanks AthFest!  Thanks, P.T.O.  We ❤ you!

Thursday, May 8 Ms. Lauren Knowlton from the Young Adult Program of the ACC Library will discuss their summer reading program with our 5th Grade.  We also will have the Books for Keeps Distribution for our 5th grade.

Monday, May 12 all library books are due for inventory.  Make sure you get them back to us no later than Friday, May 16– the last day of school!

Poetry Month!

Welcome, Wildcats! Happy Poetry Month! We love poetry here at Oglethorpe, and we have lots of fabulous poetry oriented centers for you to explore when your class visits the library. You can write poems, decorate poems, &  read poetry all month long. Remember, if you would like to check out a poetry book, you can find them in the 811’s and 821’s.

This morning our fifth grade school champions traveled with Mr. Todd and me (Mrs. Sugiuchi) to Clarke Central High School to participate in the District Battle of the Books. We are so proud of their hard work! Make sure to congratulate Aida, Tavia, Leo and Jay for representing the Wildcats in the last battle.

Exciting news! Our intern Clarissa Raybon and I were awarded a grant from First Book UGA. We will be able to purchase books for all of our CLASE students to read with a mentor and take home next semester. We so appreciate Ms. Clarissa’s help, not just with this grant but for all her hard work. Make sure you thank our interns (Todd, Clarissa, Jane, Molly,Shelby, Kristina, and Laura Frances). They help make our LMC great!

And lastly, thanks to all of our students and teachers and families. It’s an honor to work with all of you!

Happy Reading!

PS:  Super thanks to everyone for supporting our book fair.  We raised nearly a $1000 which we will use to buy supplies and pay for special programming for our LMC.
